The Honorable State Representative

Henri E. Brooks

The 14th Annual African American Church Day on Capitol Hill

March 7, 2006  × 1:30 p.m. - 3:15 p.m. × On-line Registration

This event is free and open to the public

GENERAL INFORMATION

THEME:

“RESTORE THE CARE IN TENNCARE” to emphasize the dire need, necessity and obligation to care for the “least of these.”

PURPOSE:

The purpose of “African American Church Day on Capitol Hill” is to educate the public regarding the legislative process and to focus on ECONOMIC JUSTICE AND EQUALITY through political advocacy and influence.

“African American Church Day on Capitol Hill” will give African American taxpayers the opportunity to see their elected representatives at work, and hear from the legislative and executive branch leadership-who control the purse strings (our tax dollars) of our state. Additionally, House and Senate committee chairpersons and members of the Tennessee Legislative Black Caucus will brief participants regarding their roles, responsibilities and important legislation.

We are calling upon the “faith community” to take its rightful role in the forefront of our movement for ECONOMIC JUSTICE AND EQUALITY, to step up to the “public policy plate” of our state and launch a strong and aggressive advocacy for the poor, the excluded, the underrepresented and those unable to articulate their issues in a manner that produces outcomes beneficial to them. We must take this opportunity to hear and be heard from those who make decisions regarding the expenditure of our tax dollars.  It is time for us to demand accountability from the elected leaders and those in leadership positions.

SESSIONS:

The entire day will be divided into two (2) sessions: the morning session or plenary session will begin promptly at 8:00 a.m.

During the afternoon session, from 1:30 until 3:30 p.m., participants will have the opportunity to go to Legislative Plaza, meet with House and Senate members, and attend House and Senate committee hearings where their elected representatives are discussing and making vital public policy decisions that impact their quality of life. Issues concerning TennCare, education, social services, senior citizens, childcare, children services, employment and business opportunities – all issues that impact the fabric of their lives.
